Changes at the Top!

After more than five years at Bramble Hub, Neil Simpson, our Operations Director, is preparing to step back from day-to-day management into a more strategic senior role.

Neil Simpson

Neil’s career encompasses a wide range of roles in sales, project management, and consultancy. Initially starting out as a software developer, he founded his own venture in 1987. One of his first employees was a young Richard Archer, who later went on to create Bramble Hub and (many years later) became Neil’s employer!

Over the past few years, Neil has run the Tendering and Commercial Teams at Bramble Hub. Throughout his tenure, Neil’s unwavering commitment to customer satisfaction has served as a cornerstone of Bramble Hub’s operations, building strong relationships with customers, partners and colleagues.

Neil’s role heading up the Commercial Team will be taken over by Geoff Couling, who recently joined us from Computacenter. Geoff is a cricket-loving New Zealander who has lived in the UK for 25 years. Geoff is a solicitor with 20 years of experience, primarily in commercial contracting, and a deep understanding of contracting under frameworks.

Geoff Couling

Meanwhile, Mahri Gulberdiyeva, who has worked at Bramble Hub for eight years, takes over leadership of the Tendering Team (now renamed as the Openings and Opportunities Team).

Mahri Gulberdiyeva

We congratulate Neil, Geoff and Mahri in their new roles, which will bring additional strengths across the business.

Waymark Teams up With Floki Health to Offer Hospitals an Advanced Asset-Tracking Solution

One of the many operational issues faced by busy hospitals is how to keep track of large numbers of vital – and expensive – pieces of equipment. Medical assets are, of necessity, moved around constantly (after all, a wheelchair isn’t much use if it never leaves the ward!) The cost of losing equipment (whether temporarily or permanently) is far higher than just the cost of replacing it. Key staff find themselves devoting time to tracking down assets that are needed for treatment.

Bramble Hub’s partner Waymark has teamed up with healthcare asset-tracking specialist Floki Health to offer a powerful solution to this problem. Together, they provide Floki’s technology, along with a package of consulting services, to provide NHS trusts with a way to ensure that assets are locatable when needed.

The solution includes the ability to wirelessly track the location and movement of assets and to send real-time alarms triggered by defined events. The Floki system is cloud-based, open to being integrated with other essential NHS systems, and provides comprehensive reporting and analytics.

Matt Atkinson, Waymark’s Chief Innovation Officer, explains: “Floki’s platform uses a variety of cleverly-integrated technologies to quickly identify the location of each piece of equipment.”

Fenwick Smith, CEO of Floki Health, adds: “Our solution tracks assets using Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) transmitters coupled with other technologies including RFID, GPS, barcodes, QR codes and an iOS app. Fenwick identified the need for such a tracking system when he had an operation in 2016: “While I was in the hospital, I witnessed numerous incidents when nurses couldn’t find equipment. I realised this problem must resonate across 236 trusts, and that it would likely create enormous costs.”

Matt explains, “As well as utilising cutting-edge technology, Floki’s approach provides the NHS value for money. We tailor the platform for the specific issues encountered within each individual trust. The alternative offerings tend to be both more generic and more expensive. Our solution can be highly customised to meet customer requirements, and to provide the greatest return on investment. It’s not just about collecting and displaying asset data, it’s about enabling other features which are specific to solving each customer’s use cases.”

“At the beginning of a project, we start out with a discovery exercise to determine which assets should be tracked. There’s a cost to tagging an item, so our approach is partly about prioritising what we tag. We identify the equipment, where it is, and who is accountable for it. A typical trust may have tens of thousands of assets to consider”

Fenwick explains the approach: “It’s important to us that we’re led by the use cases and associated problems, and not by the technology. Our solution connects with the NHS asset register, and monitors location-based events. Each event relates to an asset and a location and has a status and timestamp.” But, he stresses, there is little point in solving technical problems in isolation from real-life use cases. “In our approach, we facilitate user-centred design workshops to identify problems, the degree of impact, frequency of occurrence and commercial value. We also bring clinical teams together to prioritise so that they can appreciate where their problem fits within the bigger picture, and to identify those issues that have the widest impact.”

Fenwick outlines a test of Floki’s technology that he undertook for an NHS trust: “We asked two technicians to find a list of 15 assets: one using our tech, and one without. Using our tech, the exercise was completed in under 19 minutes. The other technician, trying to find the equipment manually, stopped after 3hrs 40mins, and hadn’t found a single item.”

The anecdote above helps illustrate the potential gains of implementing such a system: not only preventing the loss of assets, but saving countless precious hours of clinicians’ time.

The solution does more than allow medical staff to reactively find critical equipment, explains Fenwick. “The platform runs a continuous, real-time stock check. It allows staff to predictively move assets to where they will most likely be needed. Our system is about more than just preventing kit from being lost: we want to help transform the NHS.”

The Waymark/Floki solution can be purchased from Bramble Hub via public sector frameworks.

Profile of Cloud Gateway

The holy trinity of Norfolk employers – according to Justin Day, CEO and co-founder of Cloud Gateway – consists of Norfolk County Council, Aviva (the rebranded Norwich Union) and Bernard Matthews (undoubtedly Britain’s best-known turkey producer). Justin’s career encompasses all three.

Under Justin’s leadership, Cloud Gateway has developed an innovative way for organisations to buy cloud networking and security services. Their approach rejects the current fashion that everything should just be shifted into the cloud as quickly as possible, and instead offers bespoke solutions based on listening to customer needs. Scalability – meaning that customers don’t have to commit to a larger infrastructure than they need – is a core part of their offering.

Justin Day

Justin’s Norfolk roots are a part of the Cloud Gateway story, and help to define the company’s culture. He still lives in Norfolk, and clearly has no intention of leaving; but he commutes regularly to London, where Cloud Gateway has its new offices within a large new development that also encompasses the iconic Ministry of Sound nightclub. “I love the balance,” he says, “people versus countryside. I’m very proud to come from Norfolk – I’m not a city boy.”

Although Justin’s career started out in marketing, he quickly discovered tech when he was placed on his employer’s IT helpdesk during training. “I fell in love with it – especially comms. I enjoyed working with modems, the in-house telephony system, and doing desktop support.”

His love of hardware caused him to take the decision that led to him becoming a networking expert. “We were offered a choice of training courses: Microsoft MCSE and Cisco CCNA. Of course, almost everyone wanted the MCSE certification, which was probably the more sensible career choice at that time. But I opted for the networking path.”

Working at Cable & Wireless, Justin found himself in the e-commerce team – apparently a niche area, but in fact it offered a wealth of learning opportunities in networking and security: “Everything that was non-standard was given to our team.”

Cloud Gateway Team

After working in the financial services industry, Justin decided to move into the Public Sector, going to work at the Ministry of Justice. There, he became involved in the Digital Prisons Programme, an initiative to use technology to reduce recidivism.

“My entire world got turned around by that project. My view of prisoners and prisons changed. I started to think about the problem: how do we stop prisoners returning? One thing we did was to pull the systems together so that prisoners could access benefits as soon as they left. This was important, as so many prisoners reoffend within two weeks because they don’t have access to money. The Public Sector can be a frustrating place at times, but I’m fulfilled from knowing I’m making a difference. It’s the same across Cloud Gateway.”

How did Cloud Gateway come into being?

“We incorporated Cloud Gateway in 2017. The big cloud providers were trying to dismiss networking… just use the internet, it solves everything! We thought this was nonsense. We put together a scalable architecture for network and cloud solutions, using the best of internet and private connectivity, and took it to the MoJ. It came in at a cost of £2 million a year, versus a solution from Vodafone that was more expensive by orders of magnitude!”

The Cloud Gateway approach builds solutions from three sets of components: physical hardware, private cloud and public cloud. Cloud Gateway’s SASE architecture (Secure Access Service Edge, pronounced sassy) hides the differences between these environments, masking complexity from customers, and maintaining seamless security across them all.

Justin explains that the Cloud Gateway approach has two simple benefits: it’s much quicker and it’s much more flexible.

“We build in minutes rather than months. And we don’t insist on long term commitments – if a customer wants a 12-month contract, they can have it”

Justin believes that the big networking companies in the UK have no interest in switching to scalable solutions like the ones offered by Cloud Gateway. “Scalability will hurt BT and Vodafone – they can’t afford to do it. And the customer appetite for risk has increased. Customers don’t say ‘Nobody ever got fired…’ any more. Instead people are asking “How far behind am I going to be if I don’t do this?”
