Envision – Microsoft’s AI Showcase Comes to London

Jerry Barnett, Digital Marketing Manager

It hardly needs stating that AI is the most significant and exciting trend of 2023. It isn’t a new field; in fact, it has been a hot topic – on and off – for decades, with areas like natural language recognition, genetic algorithms and knowledge-based systems often creating excitement. But the technologies have taken time to mature, and the required computing power for serious applications has only been available in recent years.

The field has finally begun to offer commercial solutions in the past couple of years, and in the past few months almost nobody, even those outside the tech industry, could have missed the excitement and numerous controversies around AI.

On 18th October, Microsoft’s Envision event came to London’s ExCel centre, having initially launched in New York in September. I spent the day there, and what became immediately clear is that AI is on the verge of transforming business – and the public sector – from top to bottom.

AI in the public sector

One of the niche sessions examined “Accelerating AI Adoption in government”. The panel comprised Julia Mixter, the Director of Transformation at Raven Housing Trust, and KPMG’s Head of Healthcare Data and Analytics, Janak Gunatilleke. Janak is also head of KPMG’s internal AI and ML (machine learning) group.

Janak called for a structured approach to implementing AI in the public sector, building requirements for each application and business area. He stressed that AIimplementation should be driven by selecting genuine business problems and use cases, and should start with quick wins that would in turn free up funding for more ambitious projects.

Julia agreed with this business-led approach, saying that organisations should avoid creating an AI strategy, and instead explore how AI might fit into the core business strategy. She also stressed the need to ensure compliance, and to maintain strong ethical principles.

AI-powered low-code tools

Perhaps the most impressive session of the day demonstrated features that will shortly be rolled out to Microsoft’s Power Platform (PP) app development suite. The session was presented by Microsoft’s Richard Riley, and focused on integrations between Microsoft’s Copilot AI chat tool and the PP suite.

Live demos were given to an impressed audience. Particularly impressive was a “natural language to app” capability that will shortly be available in Power Apps, allowing apps to be swiftly created from text prompts. Similarly, Power Pages will soon allow websites to be created from text descriptions. These features (and more) are to be made generally available by the end of 2023.

AI is set to sharply accelerate app and web development; to the extent that same-day development of apps and websites may soon become the norm. We look forward to the release of these new tools with interest.

Nous Group takes on Public Sector Data Strategies

Bramble Hub partner Nous Group has identified five critical elements of successful public sector data strategies. Led by Katharine Purser, a Principal at Nous, and with contributions from her colleagues in the UK, Australia and Canada, the project delivered a report titled Delivering Data’s Promise: Making data strategy work in the public sector, which examines the key factors involved in creating a public sector data strategy.

Writing on the Nous website, Purser and her colleague Nic Dillon suggest that “…the difference between a winning data strategy and an under-performing one is the quality of the conversations you have along the way.” They then go on to recommend five starter questions that organisations should ask in order to begin the necessary conversations.

Shaw Consulting: Advisory Services for the Housing Sector and Beyond

Chris Shaw, the founder of Shaw Consulting, a new partner of Bramble Hub, is passionate about helping the public sector take on new ideas and technologies, and has a particular focus on the housing sector.

Chris’s public sector consulting background is impressive. He spent 12 years at Robson Rhodes, where he was Director of Consultancy for the northern area. He then moved to Tribal Group before working in the Advisory team at NCC for a further two and a half years. Eventually, Chris decided to set up his own consultancy.

“I had an established network of really good people,” Chris explains, “so we work to an associate model, with a team of core associates that allows us to place the best people on the right projects”

Shaw does not implement solutions, but instead remains independent, helping customers select and procure IT systems. “Independence is key to our approach,” says Chris.

Focus on housing

One of Shaw’s key focuses is on the housing sector, although the company also works in other parts of the public sector, including healthcare and fire & rescue. “We’re well known in the housing sector and often get asked to bid,” Chris explains. “At Robson Rhodes, my name and experience was established in the public sector, and especially in housing. It’s an interesting sector to work in with unique and interesting problems, including the management of a large asset base and the need to repair and improve it, as well as deal with issues such as tenant health and antisocial behaviour. We help our customers in the sector understand what systems are out there, procure them and engage with their customers.”

Shaw’s work

Shaw has completed significant projects for a range of public sector customers including Incommunities, the General Optical Council, Moat and Mersey Care. When asked to describe his dream project, Chris replies: “We like organisations that want to develop new strategies or want to move from legacy to a more modern environment. We get under the skin of an organisation, speak to key people and run surveys to understand thoughts. I tend to get personally involved for strategic reviews and enterprise architectural issues.”

Frameworks

Bramble Hub can supply Shaw Consulting’s services to public sector customers via a number of procurement frameworks. Chris says that the Bramble Hub service opens new opportunities to Shaw Consulting. “We’re very aware of frameworks as we run procurements for customers. We were registered on G-Cloud ourselves, but it didn’t bring us much business. The Bramble Hub partnership gives us access to bigger contracts, and I see this as an opportunity for us to access business in organisations we might not previously have had access to.”

The UK Civil Service in 2023 and beyond – a new report from Moorhouse

For the past few years, life in the public sector has been an accelerating cycle of disruption and change. With budget restraints and the arrival of new technologies, that trend is set to continue. How does this look from the perspective of the civil service?

Moorhouse Consulting, a Bramble Hub consulting partner that focuses on delivering change, has delivered a new piece of research into the views of civil servants. The report, which is titled The UK Civil Service in 2023 and beyond: Challenges and Opportunities, was produced in partnership with the School of Management at the University of Bath. It explores four questions:

  1. What does the optimum hybrid working model look like that can both drive productivity and meet the needs of individuals and teams?

  2. What can be done to address the critical capability and capacity gaps?

  3. What are the best approaches to build leadership skills now and in the future?

  4. How can teams build communities and sustainable working cultures that tackle mental health pressures?

The full report can be downloaded from Moorhouse’s site.

Moorhouse announces B Corporation status

And in other news, Moorhouse also recently announced it has achieved B Corp certification: a milestone that means the company is recognised as prioritising social and environmental goals alongside business success.

The Bramble Hub team congratulates Moorhouse on achieving this milestone.
