Meet Mark Foden, Bramble’s Change Strategy and Brand Advisor

Mark Foden has worked with Bramble for over four years. He talks about some out-of-the-ordinary videos his business – Eggvids – has made for Bramble – variously involving jazz bands, Victorian bathers, wing-walkers and false-teeth vendors

I’m a change strategy specialist; I’m particularly interested in communications. My video-making began in 2013. I’d been trying, and failing desperately, to write a blog post about how digital technology might change the innards of government: the idea of Government as a Platform. It was tricky. I drew dozens of diagrams to explain it to myself and it occurred to me that moving pictures not stationary words were needed. I also realised that anything I made would need to be a bit different if anyone was to pay the faintest bit of attention to it. So I made a 3-minute video called the Gubbins of Government. It worked. Thousands watched it, hundreds liked it and many are still using it in presentations, on courses and (I’d like to think) to alleviate the boredom of long winter nights.

Quite a few people have since asked me to make videos for them. So my video business Eggvids was… er… laid. It now employs a Digital Hen – Mark Hainge – and on its shell it says we make simple, catchy videos that explain complicated stuff.

In 2014, I met Richard Archer, the founder of Bramble. We were involved with Open Forum Europe – a group promoting openness in the technology industry. Richard had seen the video and asked if I would make something similar to explain Bramble Hub. This is it…

During the routine hubbub of life our brains filter out the ordinary. It’s a genetic hunter-gatherer thing: collect berries and don’t get distracted by anything but unusual stuff like grumpy mammoths and hungry-looking tigers with long teeth. Only the unexpected gets through.

So Eggvids tend to be unusual: fast-paced, visceral and rudimentary with dissonant pictures and an enthusiastic commentary. They use metaphor with strong images to get across abstract concepts and humour to make things catch in the mind. We love making them. They are a lot of fun to do and it’s so satisfying when folk say they made a difference to them.

The Bramble Hub video was popular with partners, clients, customers and crucially people who work in the business. One said the video gave them confidence because they had a simple, clear model in their head, which they didn’t have before. We’ve since made three more videos to explain other parts of Bramble – these are linked below.

Bramble is a different kind of business with an innovative business model, genuinely exciting ideas and very nice people. (And I’m not just saying that.) It was fab to be given the licence to do something different.

Bramble Hub leads the way to implement Cyber Essentials

Cyber Essentials is a Government scheme that helps businesses protect themselves, and the data and information they hold for customers, against cyber threats.  It has been Government policy since 2014 that suppliers to all Central Government contracts which involve handling personal information must have a Cyber Essentials certificate.  Now Crown Commercial Service (CCS) has started to make it a requirement for framework suppliers and their subcontractors on several of the new framework contracts.

Recently, Bramble Hub successfully retained its Cyber Essentials and Cyber Essentials Plus certification for another year.  We have also been strongly encouraging our partners to get Cyber Essentials, both for their own benefit, and as part of our supply chain to the public sector, to protect our customers.  We are therefore delighted to announce that all the companies actively working with Bramble Hub are in the process of acquiring a Cyber Essentials certificate and many have already achieved certification.

Although we have ISO 27001 accreditation, the international information security standard, we still found the self-assessment exercise very beneficial.  It is better than a lot of the tick-box exercises sometimes are, as it focuses on practical steps you should be taking to protect your systems and data from unauthorised intrusion.  It really helped us think about and improve our own security.  So much so that since last year we also undertook the higher level Cyber Essentials Plus assessment, which includes formal penetration testing by independent experts.

Editor’s note: The Cyber Essentials scheme comprises a simple self-assessment questionnaire which is then certified by an assessor at a cost of £300. Details of the scheme and a copy of the questionnaire are at: https://www.cyberaware.gov.uk/cyberessentials/

Meet Harriet Davies, Group Commercial & Legal Director

Harriet Davies worked with Bramble for 2 years and left following a move to Yorkshire in Spring 2019.
This interview took place when Harriet had been with Bramble for 6 months in November 2018.
On joining Bramble Harriet quickly her position at Bramble was very different to her recent, more corporate-style roles at Computer Sciences Corporation and NHS Digital.

In her words; “It is really nice to have direct access to your MD rather than have to go through lots of processes just to be heard.”

“The most useful business tip that I was lucky enough to pick up early on in my career was that absolute clarity is essential for good contracts and documentation. When everyone involved knows exactly what, how and when they are expected to deliver, and what the payment terms are, things go so much more smoothly. That’s what happens here at Bramble.”

“I started work in the legal sector almost 20 years ago and worked as a  solicitor specialising in commercial law, but changed direction about five years ago and moved into commercial management, which suits me much better. I really enjoy being more hands-on at Bramble. Instead of being a lawyer who merely gives advice, I’m embedded into a strong team and it’s my job to help to pull everything together. I make sure our contracts and documentation make sense and work as they should, and my legal background means I understand the significance of the way things are structured.”

“What matters to the team at Bramble, and to me, is the development of good, open, long term relationships with our partners and customers, the thing that motivates and directs everything we do. It’s vital to explain the commercial reasoning behind what we’re asking our partners and customers to sign, and to answer their questions in the right level of detail. I make sure they recognise their commitments and ensure that contracts and tender documents are fair and unprejudiced from everyone’s perspective. I also help identify risk right at the beginning of a contract, making sure all the relevant issues have been considered.”

harriet-davies.jpg

“At Bramble we’re completely transparent in our process. We don’t want anyone to sign contracts they don’t fully understand. Our role is to create workable contracts so both parties are completely clear about their commitments and know what is expected of them right from the start. I see my job as collaborative, but having worked as a litigator for five years previously,  I am quite happy to challenge unfair terms or flawed procurement processes in order to achieve a fair result. It’s more about delivering great quality service than a cheap, quick deal.”

“I think the Bramble model is unique in that we really do have our partners’ and customers’ best interests at heart. The Crown Commercial Frameworks have built in safeguards for all parties and if necessary I can assist in protecting interests by working in partnership to make use of these.  The thing I love most about working here is that everyone in the multi-disciplinary team is smart in their own field. They work together really well with an emphasis  on getting things done in the best possible way. The whole team is extremely approachable and if partners or customers have any queries or concerns, they know they can raise them with one of us and get useful, relevant answers.”

“Like me, a lot of the people at Bramble started off doing other things. Because of this they have a good, deep, broad understanding of the business landscape and how it works. I learned early on in my career that working with knowledgeable people with an open door policy means you enjoy access to huge amounts of experience, industrial expertise and technical knowledge, and at Bramble all these varied skills are put to great use.”

Bramble Hub’s high standards of quality and information security confirmed

We are pleased to announce that Bramble Hub successfully passed the external assessment for re-certification to ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:20115 and ISO27001:2013. This means that independent auditors have found our Quality, Environmental and Information Security Management Systems to be operating in full compliance with the requirements of the standards.   We have also recently been tested and recertified under the government-backed Cyber Essentials Plus scheme, which confirms that our facilities are protected by effective and efficient security measures.

These certificates don’t just look pretty on our website – they represent a real commitment to our partners and customers that we continue to operate at the highest possible standards

Meet Abi Selvarajah – Senior Accountant – Bramble

Abi came to us from the Daily Mail, where she was an Accounts Assistant. She has a First Degree in Accountancy & Finance and has recently passed her ACCA qualification.

meet_abi_selva.jpg

In her four years with the Bramble Group she has kept our cash flowing, and is our main liaison with partners’ and customers’ accounts teams.

“I did Accountancy and Finance at University and didn’t want to carry on with studying straight away. Having chosen my modules very carefully and taking my Degree into account, I only had five final professional levels to achieve. Last year I was promoted to senior accountant at Bramble”

“Life was pretty busy. I was working full time at Bramble, studying in the evenings and taking classes on Saturdays. Occasionally I had a mock exam in the middle of the week too – the MD and founder of the Bramble Group, Richard Archer, and Ian Budden, the group’s Finance Director, were really supportive and allowed me to take the time out and do the exams. And they gave me study days too, vital when I’d decided to take the five exams one at a time over a 2 year period.”

“When you’re working, it’s really tough to try and concentrate on your work plus exams. When I first started studying it was a bit of a shock to realise how much work I had to do, but I soon settled into it. I soon discovered how important it is to be able to focus and not get stressed about things you can’t control.”

“Luckily I’m pretty good at managing my time, and having the support of my work colleagues, my family, and particularly my husband, who took over practically everything while I was studying, really helped me focus. My mum was amazing, bringing ready-cooked dinners over to our place to make sure we ate properly. And Bramble were really good too. Some days I would get in early, bringing my books so I could study before and after work. Ian would always find the time to help me if I had any questions. While I took things at my own pace it was still pretty intense, and I didn’t really have a social life even though there was a short break between completing one exam and starting revision for the next, which gave me some much-needed freedom!”

“Having real-life examples and seeing how things actually work really helped me to understand why things work the way they do. It makes so much more sense than trying to understand complex financial matters in the abstract. Everyone in the company knew I was doing my exams and they were all behind me, very supportive. If I had to miss a day to do an exam, they’d handle everything that needed to be done, so I could relax and focus on passing. Luckily working hard at weekends meant I didn’t miss too much. I enjoy doing things myself, and doing them well.”

“Many of my peers came out of university and took their ACCA exams immediately. My three year study break worked perfectly for me. One of the benefits of taking a study break was being able to choose the perfect qualification for me, rather than rushing into something without the experience to know whether it was going to be the best option. I chose the ACCA because it fits really well with the work I do now and the career I want to continue with. It’s really important to know what you want to specialise in before you take qualifications that might send you in a different direction.”

“My family are really proud that I have got my qualification, and I can highly recommend studying for a qualification when working full time. It isn’t easy, but it’s incredibly rewarding. Since qualifying I have been given a lot more responsibility at work. Now I do our month end and year end reviews and file our VAT reports, working closely with Ian and our new team member Sandra. Every week it feels like I’m taking on more responsibility and learning more. Ian consistently guides me through things to make sure I fully understand what I’m doing. Over time I take over the responsibility myself. If I have any questions, I ask.”

“I would like to say a big thank you everyone at Bramble, particularly Ian and Richard. They’ve been so wonderfully supportive over the past two years and I really couldn’t have done it without their help. It’s great working for an organisation that really does value my qualifications, is genuinely invested in my future and enables me to take my career in the right direction.”

“Everyone at Bramble applies the exact same level of dedication to our clients’ businesses, something I am proud to be a part of. I hope to be here for many years to come!”

In a non technical sense Consolidata help businesses make better decisions using data. If a business has a data problem we could be the people to solve it!

We do it by joining up data in a sensible way,  giving  our clients an overview of all aspects of their business including financial, production, regulatory and risk. The techniques we use apply to all business types.

We use Microsoft SQL Server and Microsoft Azure,  a cloud platform that is secure robust and durable.

We save companies huge amounts of time and ensure that the data they are looking at is consistent, ‘One version of the truth’.

Once you have data you know is good you can start doing interesting things with it and a small but growing part of our business is data analytics. Using our ‘connected data’ analytics we have helped companies identify where products are being sold at below market value and to identify the sales agent who will be most effective with certain customers increasing retention.

We have seen lots of interesting problems and have some interesting solutions.

Before setting up Consolidata Gordon (Gordon Meyer) and I were both working as IT consultants and had worked together a number of times. We believed there was a market for a mid-range consultancy, one that could do a better job than a single person could but would not be as expensive as one of the large consultancies.

We have about a dozen staff and our team are really really clever people, using cutting edge technology and pushing it to its limits. Because we have worked across a range of different industries we are able to bring to bear ideas from other industries problems – solve issues you may think are unsolvable, often technically inspired solutions.

Gordon and I share a passion for wanting to do things to make a difference to the world we live in. We look for opportunities where we can use our skills in connecting data to help speed up research into community (or even global) health or environmental issues. We do what we can and we believe that if every business thought a bit more about the difference they could make – the world would be a much better place.

I started life as an electrical engineer and progressively became a computer scientist mostly by contracting with telecoms, pharmaceutical and manufacturing companies. Gordon adds experience of working in banking and insurance to the mix.

The most high profile clients we are currently working with include; Duke of Edinburgh awards, Waterstones and Aspen Insurance

Gordon and I have attended Bramble Hub Partner events and have met some really interesting people and had good conversations. We are hoping to work with one contact we made on a project shortly.

For me one of the most important things I would pass on to anyone who is setting up or runs a small business is to work with people you trust and that you like to work with. Your work life is at least half your working life and you should make it as enjoyable as possible. I like having people I like and trust around me.

The most important advice I have been given is that as a business leader you should be mentored and be a mentor – to make yourself better and to make other people better too.

Partner Insight: Joe O’Brien – Version 1

Joe O’ Brien – ‘Bring in great people who are a 100% fit with your core values and will get the job done’

Name: Joe O’ Brien

Job Title: Sales Director – Public Sector & ERP at Version 1

Company: Version 1

Website: http://www.version1.com/Home

Find more about Joe O’Brien athttps://ie.linkedin.com/in/joe-o-brien-2385a510

I have been with Version 1 since 2006 and look after the Public Sector and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) which incorporates Oracle eBusiness Suite, Fusion Cloud Applications and JD Edwards.

Version 1 have made 5 acquisitions in the UK in the past 3 years. Our most recent was midlands based JD Edwards specialist Beoley Mill Software Ltd. We acquire companies who are niche experts with fantastic customers and staff that fit with our culture and values. It’s about the feel and ethos of the organisation as much as their technical expertise.

Since our inception in 1996 we have been heavily focused on technology being a business enabler and we concentrate on working with clients using IT to make a real difference to their business. Oracle has always been core to our business with around half of our 900 strong team touching an Oracle products on a daily basis. Microsoft is another key specialisation in our business with close to 300 of our team utilising Microsoft technologies as an enabler for businesses across the UK & Ireland. We also work very closely with Amazon and numerous Open Source and Digital platforms.

We have a dedicated Managed Services team and have a proven record for managing mission critical systems implemented not only by us but also those implemented by other Systems Integrators. Our emphasis on ITIL aligned and ISO 20000 certified managed services means our deep investment in world class methodologies and locally based staff gives customers a platform for Continual Service Improvement on an ongoing basis for business critical systems.

We often acquire new customers when other SIs have done the initial implementation but they do not have the same focus on day to day operations as an organisation such as ourselves. Most people want to do the exciting projects but we understand that once a system is in place it will be there for between 10 and 15 years and customers need to continually realise business benefit from their ongoing investment

We operate on a quarterly rhythm looking at every aspect of our business every quarter. We have a‘ Strategic Triangle’ approach looking at; Customer Satisfaction, Staff Engagement and Commercial Profitability. In terms of our customer satisfaction we ask ‘How satisfied are our customers and how likely are they to recommend us?’ Our scores are running at 8.4 which is significantly higher than the industry average.

If a customer is not happy our quarterly surveys  means we are able to trap this almost immediately. We find out what the problem is and work out an action to resolve/change it.  Every quarterone of our senior management team will visit the customer to get more feedback and a better understanding of what their current business goals are, agreeing ‘Conditions of Satisfaction’ where we setout the criteria for a successful set of outcomes for that customer.  Some quarters those conditions of satisfaction may be operational in nature and in others we may collaborate by the customer to look at their business processes and visualise what technology can do to enable the growth of their business.

Other people find out at that their customer is not happy at tender time – which is often too late in the day to do anything about it! Our approach ensures an ongoing engagement with our customer where the outcomes we are working towards are fully aligned with the goals of our customers’ businesses.

We carry out quarterly Staff Engagement surveys and our current staff engagement is over 80%.  We have 20 engagement groups and our managers carry out fortnightly 1 to 1’s making sure that our staff are aligned with the overall business goals of the customer they are engaged with and that all training is aligned to specific projects that add value to our customers.

The strategic triangle approach means that we have a balanced view of how we are performing. If one element is out of sync it may have a knock on effect in subsequent  quarters and given our staff and our customers are core to everything we do we focus heavily on this .

Our core values are sacrosanct and reflect the way we deal with our staff and our customers. If we see a problem we don’t hide behind it – we use our first value, ‘Honesty and Integrity’ to deal with everything we do.

Our other values include

–          Personal commitment

–          Customer first

–          No Ego

–          Drives

–          Excellence

We do not believe that you can ever achieve excellence, it’s more about on-going improvement and about constantly looking for and finding out ways of doing things more effectively.

In terms of customers Version 1 has a good spread, around one third of our customers are public sector including local government, police, NHS and education. We work for a number of the utilities, water, gas, electricity and are strong on pharmaceuticals and life sciences, banking, insurance, telecoms, healthcare and manufacturing.

We have delivered a number of implementation, business transformation and managed service engagements which has positioned Version 1 as one of the very few Sis who are big enough to deliver large programmes but flexible and agile enough to adjust a service quickly if required by a customer.  This is a key differentiator for us in a market which is bookended by the multinational Sis at one end and the smaller expert niche players at the other end of the spectrum.

If I was to give advice to another business it would be to have a vision for what you want to achieve and then clearly plan how you will execute that vision. Don’t try and be smarter or more clever: the best businesses are those who do the simple things consistently all the time, every time.  Bring in great people who are a 100% fit with your core values and will get the job done, and finish each task no matter how big or small. Completer finishers are vital in our industry Indeed during our recruitment processes, we consciously look for proof that the staff member has a completer finisher mentality (it aligns to a number of our core values such as Drive, Personal Commitment and Customer First).

The best bit of business advice I have ever been given was on my first day working as a graduate by my first manager who told me never to forget that IT is not there for the sake of technology but rather ‘to facilitate the processes that make organisations functional’. Even now, 18 years later I can see the wisdom in that.

Bramble Hub & Version 1 have partnered on a number of successful engagements over the past number of years. We like the way Bramble conduct their business: it is very professional, transparent and collaborative. The Bramble approach is obviously a good vehicle for organisation like us for Crown Commercial projects and gives us a reach into customers who require our Oracle, Microsoft, Amazon and wider services.
